Local to Cambrian Point are two pubs; Blackweir Tavern and The North Star. The North Star is popular amongst students for their decked out vintage venue, great quality food and drink. The Black Weir Tavern is a cheap and cheerful pub with meals being served day and night for less than £10. Also, Fattoush is only a few yards from the residence and is run by students; it offers high quality and tasty food, catering for your palette and budget.
The Cathays and Roath student areas are just a short 10 minute walk from Cambrian Point, and are hugely dominated by independent student restaurants and takeaways serving good quality food – the kind which is cheap and where the portions are generous, too! Daiquiri’s, Lilo’s Grill House, Mina, and Cafe 37 are just a few of the popular student haunts, and there will be something to suit everyone’s taste and budget. Additionally, there are various pubs around the area such as Gassy Jacks, Koko Gorilaz, Varsity and Woodville, with special offers and promotions available on selected nights.
Alternatively, Cardiff Student Union is a less than a 10 minute walk from Cambrian Point and offers a range of nights to suit everyone. One night held each month is Treatment, Cardiff’s answer to The Warehouse Project where tons of famous and local DJ’s have performed. What's Around
Cambrian Point is situated on Maindy Road, which is just over a 10 minute walk from Cardiff University. It’s absolutely surrounded by things to see and do.
National Museum Cardiff is a short walk from the residence and covers the natural history of Wales. It also takes you through a journey of the Evolution of Wales, from the beginning to the present day, and there are also various art collections from over 500 years ago on display. Your learning doesn’t have to stop when you leave the classroom! Conveniently close to the National Museum is Cardiff Castle, this historic castle is surrounded by Bute Park, where you can sit and enjoy the sun with a picnic when you’ve got some free time away from lectures.
The New Theatre is within walking distance from Cambrian Point, and hosts a variety of shows and plays throughout the year, featuring some well-known celebrity faces.
Cardiff Bay is also well worth a visit, and is conveniently located only a 5 minute journey by train from Cardiff Queen Street Station. Here you will find the Doctor Who Experience, Wales Millennium Centre and plenty of bars and restaurants to enjoy.
You’re blessed at Cambrian Point because of how close you are to other forms of entertainment too. You’re close by to a Cineworld cinema and downtown where you’ll find loads of theatres such as New Theatre, National Theatre Wales and Sherman Cymru – to name just a few.
Staying Active
Sports fans will be spoilt for choice in Cardiff. Cambrian Point is extremely close to Maindy Fitness Centre which offers members a fully fitted gym with various fitness machines, all for a reasonable fee. They also hold loads of different classes such as Yoga, Aerobics, Spin or Zumba – but the choice extends to pretty much anything you can think of. They also have a swimming pool and a 470m cycle track available for anyone to use.
If you like running, Park Run is a 5k fun run which takes place every Saturday morning at 9am, starting at The Taff Trail next to Tesco on Western Avenue. It might seem like a lot of effort to get yourself out of bed so early on a weekend, but as it’s only a ten minute walk from Cambrian Point, you’ve really got no excuses!
A short 15 minute bus ride to Cardiff Bay will take you right to Cardiff Arena – home to Cardiff’s Ice Hockey Team. If you get chance to catch a game here you will not be disappointed. Additionally, in the city centre you will find the Principality Stadium, home to the Welsh National Rugby team, where you can soak up the electric atmosphere on match day.
Football fans really won’t be disappointed. Cardiff City FC, known as the Cardiff Bluebirds, play at the Cardiff City Stadium and it’s just under 15 minutes away from Cambrian Point by car.
Just around the corner from Cambrian Point is Cardiff City Table Tennis Club, where you can join and play matches against locals, as well as members from different towns and cities to get some healthy competition going!
Travel and Transport
Cambrian Point is in a perfect location to get to any part of the city. The residence is situated a 15 minute walk from Cardiff city centre which is only a short 5 minute bus ride away.

Cathays train station is located a 10 minute walk from the residence and gives you a quick link into the city centre and Cardiff Bay. Cardiff Central train station is in the city centre and provides a quick link to other major cities such as London, Bristol and Swansea. Bristol and Swansea are less than an hour away, and the UK’s capital; London is just over two hours by train making it very easily accessible. Central station is less than 15 minutes away by car or bus.
Additionally, Cardiff Airport is based just outside the centre and is accessible by train or bus if you are travelling further afield. The airport provides a range of widespread routes, and can be reached in 20 minutes by car and 30 minutes by train. Taxi services in the area are quick, cheap and reliable, meaning getting home at night after an evening out in the city centre is super easy.

Cambrian Point benefits from a great selection of local amenities including a Tesco Metro which is a 5 minute walk from the residence. Also close by is a local convenience store, a Chinese takeaway and a petrol station.
Additionally, Whitchurch Road, which is just a few minutes’ walk from the residence, has a good selection of amenities. These include a Sainsbury’s Local, Co-operative, launderette, vintage charity shops and plenty more.
Located on Western Avenue is a large Tesco Extra supermarket which is a 10 minute walk from Cambrian Point, selling everything you need including groceries, clothes and electricals.
If you’re just looking for a place to grab a nice dinner, Cardiff city centre has an abundance of restaurants such as Nando’s, Pizza Express, Bill’s, Cosy Club and TGI Friday’s, so you’ll be spoiled for choice.
The city centre is also home to hundreds of high street shops, and St David’s indoor shopping mall. It’s been expanded recently so it’s super swish and it’s got everything you could ever want, including over 120 big names in retail. Here you will also find a good selection of high street banks and bureau de change services.

Cardiff’s many universities offer free and confidential advice on finances, careers and student welfare, or anything else which you may need help with. In the case of an emergency, Cambrian Point is also close to the University Hospital of Wales; the hospital has a walk-in service and an emergency dentist.
Additionally, Roath Clinic for family planning is around a 10 minute bus ride from the residence – you don’t need an appointment so it’s quick and convenient. There is also a doctor’s surgery and a Lloyds pharmacy located a few minutes from Cambrian Point, situated on Whitchurch Road.
