Quay Point (Liberty Quay)

With both the Newcastle University and Northumbria University within a 15-minute walk, Quay Point is ideally situated for the 695 students that call it home. What’s more, the heart of the city is only 10 minutes away, making it easy to enjoy all that Newcastle has to offer.

Opt to live in Quay Point (previously known as Liberty Quay) and you’ll have a choice of en-suite rooms, giving you your very own bathroom. In addition to this, rooms come with a comfortable bed, study desk and plenty of storage. As you’ll be sharing a fully-fitted kitchen and living space with your flatmates, mealtimes offer a great chance to socialise.

Away from your flat, there’s plenty of space to relax and socialise with your friends. The common room has comfortable seating, a TV area and foosball, while an outdoor courtyard and BBQ area gives you space to venture outdoors if the sun is shining. Feeling active? Being so close to the city centre, you’ll have no shortage of options when you’ve got time to spare. There are hundreds of shops, pubs and restaurants, while several multi-screen cinemas are perfectly placed for a few hours of light entertainment. Head to the Quayside on sunny days and you’ll be able to enjoy a beautiful walk along the River Tyne.

Quay Point is located in central Newcastle; less than 10 minutes’ walk from Northumbria University and its Students’ Union. The location of the residence means you will never be far away from the exciting social scenes the city has to offer.

Newcastle’s bars and pubs are known for being extremely welcoming and great value for money. You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to entertainment as Quay Point is located around hundreds of restaurants, bars, and music venues.

A few minutes’ walk from the residence is a popular student bar and restaurant; Nancy’s Bordello. The bar is especially well-known for its delicious cocktails and quirky interior, and they also do great value food; so don’t miss out!

The Quayside is an area set along the River Tyne, home to Newcastle’s iconic Millennium Bridge, just 5 minutes’ walk from Quay Point. The area has recently been redeveloped and now houses many pubs, bars, restaurants and nightlife. Some favourites to visit include; Pitcher and Piano, Slug and Lettuce, The Quayside, and the Baltic Café Bar (with fantastic views across the water).

Located just 15 minutes' walk from Quay Point, you'll find popular restaurants such as The Botanist and Jamie's Italian.

Nightlife in Newcastle is among one of the best in the UK. Music lovers will be spoilt for choice with the many live music venues, including; The Metro Radio Arena, the O2 Academy and The Sage Music Centre in the Quayside.

For a sophisticated night, head to Collingwood Street known as the Diamond Strip, 15 minutes from Quay Point. Here you will find a variety of bars and clubs including Madame Koo, Perdu and Revolution.

Newcastle is compact yet big enough to get that city-like experience. Newcastle boasts a large collection of museums, galleries, theatres, and entertainment venues. There is something for everyone to enjoy in the city, to suit all tastes and budgets.

The Gate cinema and leisure complex is 20 minutes’ walk from your student accommodation and houses a 12-screen cinema and 19 venues over three floors including restaurants, bars and nightclubs. For live music, visit the O2 Academy and the City Hall featuring some well-known bands and artists.

If you want to learn about the history of Newcastle, The Discovery Museum is worth a visit –25 minutes’ walk from Quay Point. Or why not visit the Life Science Centre in the city centre, to learn all about life? Finally, we recommend The Great North Museum – a Natural History Museum just 20 minutes’ walk from Quay Point.

If you enjoy sightseeing, take a walk down to the Quayside to see the iconic Millennium Bridge as well as The Baltic Centre which houses contemporary art. The Quayside has many pubs, restaurants, hotels and nightclubs to explore which are perfect to enjoy on a sunny day.

Newcastle is a shopper’s paradise! Eldon Square is 15 minutes’ walk from Quay Point and is open until 8pm. There are over 150 shops to choose from, including all the well-known high street names like John-Lewis, Apple, New Look, Topshop and hundreds more. Northumberland Street is the main shopping area, with some quirky indie-type shops. If that’s not enough, why not try the Metrocentre in Gateshead? It’s just 20 minutes away on the Metro, and the experience stretches far beyond just retail.

Take a walk to Leazes Park to relax in between and after lectures, perfect for a game of football or Frisbee and a BBQ with friends in the summer. For stretches of beautiful coastline, you must visit Whitley Bay and Tynemouth – 20 minutes on the Metro from Manners station.

If you like to keep fit, Northumbria University is located a 5 minute walk from Quay Point and is home to an array of sporting services.  Not only do they have a fully equipped gym, they also house a 12m climbing wall and a 25m swimming pool.  

For fans of professional sport, Newcastle is well-known for its football club; Newcastle United. Their stadium is St James’ Park; in itself a hugely visual presence within the city and under 30 minutes’ walk from Quay Point. Fans of Cricket will relish in the fact that Durham County Cricket Club is a 20 minute train journey away; the club hosts England International matches.

The Newcastle Eagles are the most successful British Basketball team in BBL and play their games at Northumbria University – 5 minutes from Quay Point.

Exhibition Park is 30 minutes’ walk away, perfect for a game of football with friends or a gentle jog. Check out the weekly Saturday park run – it’s free!

Quay Point is located on Stepney Lane, a short 5 minute walk from the city centre of Newcastle and Northumbria University campus. The residence is ideally located so that you can make the most out of your time here.

Newcastle’s main train station is 5 minutes’ walk away and provides a quick link to other cities around the UK in all less than 3 hours, including London, Leeds, Scotland, and Manchester.  Additionally Newcastle has its own Metro train system, connecting the city centre with Jesmond, Gateshead, Sunderland and the coast in just under 30 minutes. The nearest Metro station to Quay Point is Manors Station – 5 minutes’ walk away. For those who live outside of the UK, Newcastle International Airport is 6 miles north of the city and can be reached by the Metro as well. 

As well as the Metro system and Central train station there are two bus stations offering cheap fares across the city. If you are feeling really adventurous, catch one of the daily ferries from the International Ferry Terminal at North Shields to Amsterdam.

Quay Point is located near a range of local amenities, meaning popping to the shop for your everyday essentials can be done easily.

Opposite the residence is a Premier convenience store, perfect if you fancy a quick snack. There is also a Sainsbury’s local 5 minutes’ walk away. Additionally, if you take a walk into the city centre, you’ll find a range of small supermarkets, including Tesco, Waitrose and many more.

For an even bigger range of choice, there is a larger Morrison’s within 5 minutes walking distance from Quay Point. Alternatively, there is a larger Asda in Byker Retail Park, a short taxi ride away.

All local high street banks, including HSBC, NatWest, Barclay’s, RBS and more can be found in the city centre which is a 5 minutes’ walk from the residence. Of course, you’ll also find all the important places for your errands, such as a Post Office and Bureau de Change.

Northumbria University has a library available on campus to study at between lectures, and is located 5 minutes’ walk from Quay Point. Additionally, you can visit The City Library in the city centre which is open 6 days a week.

You will be able to receive free advice regarding finances, careers and general welfare when studying at any of Newcastle’s universities. Quay Point is located close to campus so you’ll never be too far from anything you may need, no matter how big or small. 

In case of an emergency, The Royal Victoria Infirmary is located 15 minutes’ walk away in the city centre. The hospital has a GP walk-in service which runs alongside its Accident and Emergency unit. The New Croft Centreoffers sexual health and family planning services and is approximately 15 minutes’ walk from Quay Point.

The local GP surgery for Quay Point is Saville Medical Practice located by Northumbria University, 5 minutes’ walk from the residence. Additionally, Quayside Pharmacy is a few moments’ walk away for any medicine or prescriptions.
