Westhill Hall

Previously known as Liberty Hall, Westhill Hall is home to 499 students and is an ideal home, with the city centre on your doorstep and campus just a 10-minute walk away.

At Westhill Hall you’ll find a range of en-suite rooms available to you, each type offering a different amount of space. They all come with their own bathroom, a study desk and plenty of storage space, while a fully-fitted kitchen and living area is shared between flatmates. Step away from your flat and you’ll find the building’s common areas, where you can play pool, foosball and video games, or just relax on the comfortable seating.

Sheffield city centre is the place to be when you have some downtime. Feeling hungry? Check out The Street Food Chef for a delicious Mexican treat or the Forge Bakehouse for an incredible brunch and the best bread you’ve ever tasted. Feeling thirsty? The Devonshire Cat (located just across the road) and the Beer Engine are student-friendly bars offering a huge range of drinks in a relaxed environment. Need to stock up on supplies? Aldi and Asda are less than a 20-minute walk away.

Westhill Hall is located in one of the best spots in the city for a student studying in Sheffield. You’ll not only be in the heart of the city centre, but also around a 10 minutes’ walk from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University – so getting to lectures will be a breeze!

With the city centre on your doorstep you’ll have all the shopping amenities you could possibly need, from supermarkets and banks to restaurants and bars, all a few steps away from your accommodation.

Sheffield is known for having an exciting nightlife, with nightclubs such as The Leadmill less than a 15 minute walk from Westhill Hall – offering live music and indie club nights every week. Popular student clubs are also located on Division Street and West Street, each only a 5 minute walk away from the residence. The area has a diverse selection of bars and restaurants, including Revolución de Cuba, Forum, Vodka Revolution, and Bungalows and Bears – to name just a few.

The o2 Academy is another great venue for live music and performances. It’s less than 15 minutes’ walk away from the residence and hosts concerts from international bands and famous singers.

You’ll find a cheap night out in nightclubs such as The Plug and Corporation, offering student friendly deals on drinks. These are only a short walk away from Westhill Hall so you can easily get back to your accommodation after a night out.

If you’re looking for a place to eat, Sheffield city centre has restaurants offering an array of cuisines to choose from. You can try Wagamama, Ask Italian, Pizza Express, Craft and Dough and Edo Sushi.

Just in front of Westhill Hall you’ll be able to enjoy a touch of nature at Devonshire Green; it’s a park which hosts special markets, music festivals and live performances throughout the year.

Westhill Hall is in the heart of the city centre so getting to your nearest shop, train station or shopping centre is an easy walk away. In addition to having lots of retail stores, restaurants, bars and coffee shops on your doorstep, you’ll also be a 15 minute walk from Sheffield train station where you can catch a train to many different places and attractions.

For a unique experience try Moor Market, it has around 200 stalls selling clothing, food and a range of other items that you won’t find in high street shops. It’s only a 5 minute walk from Westhill Hall and they have lots of events throughout the year.

On Moor Street there’s a great range of shopping outlets, whether you need to do food shopping in the Sainsbury’s supermarket, eye up the latest fashion trends in Debenhams, or even just grab a few essentials in Superdrug. There’s also a Primark store, plus many other brands to choose from – just take your pick.

Alternatively, Meadowhall is a huge shopping centre located just a 30 minute supertram ride away from the residence. It offers over 270 big brands and independent shops under one roof, housing everything from designer names to quirky gifts, bargains and more.

If you love movie nights you’re in luck. The Odeon Cinema and Showroom Cinema are less than 15 minutes’ walk from Westhill Hall. If you enjoy live performances there’s also an impressive theatre complex, offering national touring shows and in-house performances.

If you’re looking for a place to lunch with a twist, why not try The Peace Gardens, The Winter Garden or the Millennium Galleries – which are all under 15 minutes’ walk away from the residence. Additionally, Sheffield has over 80 parks and green spaces, so there will always be somewhere to unwind peacefully in the sun.

For local entertainment, don’t forget to check out the events held at Sheffield City Hall. It includes everything from comedy club shows to contemporary dance performances.

To hear about Sheffield’s industrial history visit The Kelham Island Museum, which is a 20 minute walk away from Westhill Hall and showcases the period from the early industrialisation of Sheffield all the way through to modern times.

Sheffield Hallam University students can use their own gym at a special discounted rate. It offers modern fitness equipment and makes it easy to fit in a quick workout between lectures.

You can also access gyms in the city centre such as PureGym or The Gym, which are open 24 hours a day – and they’re both under 20 minutes’ walk from Westhill Hall.

The Peak District National Park attracts visitors from across the country, and is a must see. It’s not far, and covers a third of Sheffield with lots of hills and greenery. It offers some of the best views of nature in the UK; and it’s great for climbers, fitness enthusiasts and for camping in the warm summer weather.

Football fanatics can watch local games in Bramall Lane, which is home to the Sheffield United FC and is located less than 15 minutes’ walk from Westhill Hall.

Live sports fans can also check out The Sheffield Steelers; Sheffield’s ice hockey team or The Sheffield Sharks; Sheffield’s basketball team. Both are based in the Motorpoint Arena, which is around 20 minutes away by bus from the residence.

Westhill Hall puts you at the centre of the city, but it’s also super-close to many of the bus and tram routes which should help you travel around Sheffield with ease.

You’ll be able to walk to the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University in around 10 minutes. Or, if you need to catch a bus, you’ll have Mappin Street bus stop on West Street, less than 5 minutes’ walk from the residence.

Over 10 different bus services stop here including numbers 6, 51, 52, 120, 181, 271 and 275, so finding your way around the city will be easy.

Stagecoach Supertram serves the city of Sheffield and covers three major routes for your convenience. From the West Street stop you can gain easy access to the city centre, shopping area, the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University, sport arenas and entertainment venues.

Trams are a modern and easy way to travel, and they offer cheap tickets too – these can be purchased from Stagecoach per term, or per year. Purchasing a season ticket provides travel on all services provided by Stagecoach.

For a trip to visit other UK cities, you can use Sheffield Midland train station, located under 15 minutes’ walk from Westhill Hall. You can reach iconic cities such as Leeds, Manchester and Nottingham in less than an hour. London and Newcastle can also be reached in just over 2 hours and 30 minutes.

If you ever need a ride to and from your accommodation, taxi services are cheap and reliable – they’re especially handy on those late nights out.

Westhill Hall puts you at the centre of all the stores and supermarkets you’ll need to get your daily essentials. Just a short walk away from the residence you can stock up on food from the local Sainsbury’s or Waitrose supermarkets.

If you venture into the city centre there’s a range of international restaurants to pick from including Chinese, Indian, Mexican and good old traditional British food.

Another great spot for food and shopping is The Devonshire Quarter; it offers an eclectic and exciting variety of shops and restaurants. Even better news is the fact that it’s less than 5 minutes from Westhill Hall!

The main street for shopping is Fargate, an area just 10 minutes from Westhill Hall. It also has all the major banks such as Barclay’s, HSBC, Santander and NatWest, so you don’t have to worry about going far to get everything you need.

For a quiet place to study and do some work, Sheffield Central Library is just 10 minutes’ walk away from the residence on Surrey Street. 

The city’s universities offer free and confidential advice about employment, careers, finances and anything else – so you’ll get all of the support you need on your path to success.

In case of an emergency, there are two main hospitals in Sheffield; The Royal Hallamshire Hospital, which is less than a 20 minute walk and The Northern General Hospital, 15 minutes by taxi from Westhill Hall. You can also get dental assistance at The Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, which is also a 15 minute taxi ride away.

Students are encouraged to register at the local General Practice; and yours is the Rockingham House on Broad Lane. It’s a walk-in centre which means you don’t need an appointment to visit the clinic. The centre is an 8 minute walk from Westhill Hall, and its open 7 days a week (until 10pm).

Your local pharmacy, Boots, is just a 10 minute walk away in Fargate, which is the main shopping centre in town.
